Age: 47
Occupation: Director of Human Resources, Charles Schwab & Co.
Education: B.A., sociology, State University of New York (Binghamton), master of science in management, Lesley College (Cambridge, Mass.)
Experience: I am an incumbent seeking re-election. In February 2008, I was selected to replace Sally Blatt, who stepped down from the board after many years of service. I have been a parent in the Larkspur School District for over 10 years. My husband and I have three children, two of whom are currently in Redwood High School (having gone through Neil Cummins Elementary and Hall Middle School) and a third child who is in fourth grade at Neil Cummins Elementary School. Prior to joining the board, I volunteered for five years on the Corte Madera Larkspur Schools Foundation, for three years as chair of the Family Giving campaign, followed by two years as co-president of the foundation. In addition, I have served on the Hall Middle School Site Council.
I have over 20 years of experience in the field of human resources and feel that my knowledge and expertise are a good complement to the various talents and skills that currently exist on our board.
Why did you decide to run for the Larkspur School District board?
I enjoy the partnership that I have with the various constituents that make up the Larkspur School District as well as our community of Corte Madera and Larkspur. With three positions open to replace, I feel it is important to provide consistency and continuity during these challenging times. The time that I have spent on the board has provided me with knowledge and understanding that will be critical to maintain as we look to the future.
What issues are of highest importance to you?
We have a lot to be proud of in our school district. The strategic priorities that we have created govern the action of our district and shape every decision we make. Ensuring that our children can learn and grow in a safe and respectful environment is critical; equally vital is providing excellence in academics and striving to make sure we meet the needs of each individual child. In order to achieve these goals, we must continue to recruit and retain top talent among our staff and administration. We must also remain fiscally responsible to the district and the community, since we frequently are turning to our parents and local business leaders to support us through donations and parcel taxes. The passage of Measure B on this year’s election ballot is critical in order for us to maintain small class sizes and ensure an optimal learning environment. Finally, it is paramount that we invite open and regular communication with all the constituents of our community, whether it is parents, teachers, students or our local business leaders. All of these issues are important to me.
Describe your vision for Larkspur schools.
My vision for the Larkspur district schools is built upon the very solid foundation that exists today. I want to be able to walk into any classroom and see the love of learning being experienced. I would like to see teachers engaged in small learning groups. I would like to see children learning from each other and actively participating with their peers. I would like to see facilities that support different types of learning because children each see and hear things in ways that are unique to them, and the job of a district is to recognize and respect those differences and celebrate them. In these challenging fiscal times, it is all too easy to lose sight of this vision. But I am confident, based on my experience with the board, that with every decision we make we will ask, How will this benefit the children of our community? And with every decision we make, the answer will be affirmative.

Age: 47
Occupation: Program manager for Barclays Global Investors.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, Harding University 1984; MBA from UC Berkeley, 2000.
Experience: School volunteer, Special Olympics volunteer. Two children in the district, one at Neil Cummins Elementary School, one at Hall Middle School. Relevant professional experience managing departmental and project budgets for many years.
Why did you decide to run for the Larkspur School District board?
I decided to run because I have been very pleased over the years with the administration and staff who have contributed so professionally to the academic development of our children. The school district now faces difficult challenges, and I would like to contribute in taking what is already an excellent district and setting its path into the future.
What issues are of highest importance to you?
I believe our school district will continue to face financial difficulties for the foreseeable future, and we will have an increasingly difficult time continuing to provide an excellent quality of education as a result of the state’s fiscal crisis. It is also important that we address the achievement gap for some students in our district and work to bring all students to the level of proficiency of which they are capable.
Describe your vision for Larkspur’s schools.
As a trustee, I would strive to ensure the continued fiscal responsibility of the board, and foster an environment that brings together the best of our administration, staff, students and community. If these goals are achieved, our entire community, including businesses and residents without children in Hall or Neil Cummins, will benefit in addition to our students.

Age: 51
Occupation: I am a commercial real estate transactional attorney in a Sausalito-based law firm I co-founded 13 years ago.
Education: I have a BBA from UW-Madison (Wisconsin) (finance and marketing majors with an international business overlay) and a JD from New York Law School/Hastings College of Law.
As part of my JD program I interned with the International Chamber of Commerce in New York City and worked with the AIA and Deak-Perrera International Bank/Foreign Currency.
Experience: My applicable experience for the trustee position includes being a board member of other nonprofit organizations and companies, an adviser to the district’s Facilities Committee (for 1½ years), co-chair of the foundation’s 2009 auction, head-room parent (third grade), member of the Parcel Tax Committee, adviser to the district regarding real estate matters, in-class volunteer for art, field trips and other activities, volunteer for most fundraising events and hot-lunch volunteer. By being so actively involved with the schools and attending countless school board meetings, I do understand the needs of our school district and the challenges we are facing in the ensuing years. I also understand how the classrooms operate and the needs and concerns of our teachers and administrative staff, especially since I taught a graduate program at San Jose State University for 11 years before our eldest child was born. All of these experiences as well as my educational and professional background lend to my being able to be a productive school board trustee.
Why did you decide to run for Larkspur School District?
My husband, Alan Bear, and I have three young children and a loving dog; our eldest daughter is in fifth grade at Hall and our boy-girl twins are in pre-school. We have lived in Corte Madera since 1992 and have always been strong supporters of the schools and community.
I decided to run for the Larkspur School District Board in order to make a difference and to give back to the community. I truly believe that I can be very effective to assist our school board with the critical issues we are facing. I am committed and dedicated to our schools, our children and our community. I figured it was time for me to go on the other side of the trustees’ “table” and contribute to an already excellent school board and school district.
What issues are of highest importance to you?
I have always believed that every child deserves the best possible start in life. Quality education is the cornerstone to achieve that goal. That is why the issues of greatest importance to me are those that are most important to the present school board. Those issues include maintaining and continuing excellent schools with quality core and related programs, small class sizes, quality and dedicated teachers and administrators while being in a financial crisis. To that end, understanding and managing our district’s fiscal budget as funding from the state continues to be drastically cut is critical now. Equally important is ensuring that the programs instilling core values in our children are continued so that our children are able to positively contribute to our community, the Bay Area and ultimately society in general.
Describe your district vision.
My vision for our schools is the continuation of the excellent academic and moral/social programs. We will need to provide the necessary support to those people that truly make our schools excel, namely the teachers and administrators and staff. This support will also include providing upgraded facilities to address the explosive growth in our schools and the deterioration of the facilities.
To that end, our entire community needs to join together to support the backbone of our country, the educational needs of our children.
I ask for your support of my candidacy to become a school board trustee for the Larkspur School District by voting for me on Nov. 3.
Thank you for your consideration and support!

Age: 44
Occupation: Environmental consultant/geologist
Education: B.S. geophysics, UC Santa Barbara, 1987
Experience: In addition to being an active parent, my professional experience can contribute directly to the position of trustee. I am a California Registered Geologist and have worked for the same environmental firm for the past 20 years. My responsibilities have included:
• Development and implementation of strategic plans
• Budget planning, implementation and cost reductions as necessary
• Execution of project work; hiring, firing and implementation of all human resource policies
• Working with staff to prioritize project or office goals and consensus building
• Conducting technical and communication trainings
• Performing quality-assurance and quality-control reviews
• Environmental greening and sustainability practices
As a scientist, manager and leader, I’ve been responsible for critical projects, including the cleanup of Hunters Point Shipyard ($25M budget), leading and managing an office of 25 staff and currently managing a $20M environmental program for UC Berkeley. In addition to providing technical support, I represent my clients at community meetings, where the topics discussed are often controversial and the participants can be highly emotional. My experience in mediating numerous groups has honed my ability to successfully interact with diverse stakeholders with sensitivity and a focus on progress.
Why did you decide to run for the Larkspur School District board?
I am applying for the Larkspur board of trustees because I want to contribute to maintaining and enhancing what is already an excellent school district. I am a proud parent of two in our district, and I enjoy being involved in their schools through many volunteer opportunities. I currently serve on Hall’s Site Council, an advisory board of parents, school representatives and students, and have attended trustee meetings regularly over the past two years. I am committed to ensuring that our children receive the best possible education.
What issues are of highest importance to you?
Our district faces tough budget challenges in California’s struggling economy. I have experience making tough decisions and constructively facilitating diverse groups to achieve progress. I believe that diversity and differing opinions should be encouraged; there are two sides to every issue, and our solutions must incorporate the full range of viewpoints. I look forward to contributing my experience and talents to help ensure sound decisions are made for our students and community.
Describe your vision for Larkspur schools.
Great public schools happen through the commitment of everyone: students, teachers, parents, administrators, the community and board members. I am committed to protecting the Larkspur School District’s well-deserved reputation for academic quality and positive learning environment.
