Hoffmann shoots 86 in NCS golf tourney

Novato High freshman Ali Hoffmann shot a 12-over-par 86 at the North Coast Section Golf Championships at Baywood CC in Arcata Monday.

Her efforts on the par-74, 6,000-yard course left her short of qualifying for Monday’s NorCal Championships at Almaden CC. The top four individuals and top three teams in the field advance to NorCals; no individuals or teams from Marin County advanced.

“I had trouble getting the ball to the green,” said Hoffmann, medalist at last week’s NCS Qualifier at Tilden Park in Berkeley. “I putted well (29 putts) but it was cold and wet and the air was heavy and it was hard to pick the right clubs.”

Hoffmann had one birdie and a number of pars, but piled up strokes on a few holes.

“We played a practice round at Baywood Sunday, and I didn’t play well then either,” she said. “I’m sure I gave away six or seven strokes Monday.”

The top scores were a 75, 77 and two 79s, so Hoffman was seven strokes out of making it into a playoff for a NorCal berth.

“It was a good season but I wish it had ended differently,” she said. “I guess I have a reputation to hold up next year, and Steve (Novato coach Steve Snyder, who was with Hoffmann in Arcata) and I are already talking about a practice schedule.”

Dwight Clark BBQ Nov. 14 at Novato High

The second Dwight Clark Fundraiser, sponsored by the Novato High Sports Boosters, is Nov. 14 in the Old Gym at Novato High School following the MCAL football game at home against San Marin.

The event, from 5-7 p.m., includes a BBQ buffet with former 49er great Dwight Clark, a personal autograph on the item of your choice, Q&A session, raffle prizes and other activities. Tickets are $49, with the first 50 people purchasing tickets entered in an “early bird raffle” to win an autographed football on which Clark has personally diagrammed “The Catch.”

Clark, the NFL Player of the Year in 1982, retired with impressive statistics: 506 receptions for 6,750 yards and 48 touchdowns. His No. 87 was retired by the 49ers.

Youth tickets are available for $20, but do not include an autograph. Dwight Clark and 49ers memorabilia and merchandise will also be available. Proceeds benefit all Novato High athletic programs.

Go to www.novatohs.org/athletics for additional information. To purchase tickets, contact Bridget Santella, (415) 827-1302, or visit Gayle McCoy at Novato High.

A free “I Did It” T-shirt will be provided to each person who brings in a new item from the following sports: basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, tennis, kickball, red recess ball. The drive will continue through Nov. 13.

Donations will be distributed later this month to schools with the greatest equipment needs. Those wishing to participate should bring donated items to either the Novato clinic at 165 Rowland Way, Suite 101, or to the San Anselmo clinic at 220 Greenfield Ave., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Bikers Ball Nov. 14

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) will celebrate its “success in advocacy and on-the-ground achievements” with the Bikers Ball on Saturday, Nov. 14.

This year’s event runs from 7 p.m. until midnight at Servino Restaurante in Tiburon. Dancing to live music by Graffitti, appetizers, dessert, wine, beer and silent and live auctions will be featured.

Tickets are limited and cost $65 for MCBC members, $75 for non-members.

The Bikers Ball will offer an array of auction items, including B&B overnights and bikes. Participants can also bid on a fully-supported mountain bike trip for two in Canyonlands National Park, a Colorado ski condo rental, bicycle clothing and gear, a scenic airplane flight, massage certificates, dinner at local restaurants, performing arts tickets and more.

Proceeds benefit MCBC’s efforts to maintain “safe, accessible Marin County bicycling.” More details on the MCBC website, www.marinbike.org.

St. Vincent wins again

Novato players once again had an impact as St. Vincent of Petaluma improved to 6-2 overall, 3-0 in NCL I South Saturday with a 42-0 win over St. Helena.

Steve Blanchette returned an interception 103 yards for a TD and Zack Schlegel caught two passes for 53 yards and two scores to lead the offense.

Player to speak at 49ers Booster meet

A member of the San Francisco 49ers football team will be guest speaker at the Marin 49ers Boosters Club dinner meeting Nov. 9 at the San Rafael Elks Lodge.

The 49ers send an active member of the team, most recently running back Moran Norris and wide receiver Josh Morgan. Former 49er Guy McIntyre chooses the player but his identity is not usually known until a day or two before the meeting.

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. then from 7-9 p.m. is the speaker, Q&A and a raffle of 49er items. Cost is $30 for members, $40 for non-members. For tickets e-mail sugaremy@aol.com or call (415) 479-8849.

The Marin 49ers Booster Club is one of the oldest in the Bay Area, going back more than 50 years to when the team played at Kezar Stadium. In the past, Bill Walsh and Dwight Clark have been guest speakers, according to club president Willie Danz.
