Despite years of legal appeals, months of petitioning Sen. Dianne Feinstein and strong local support, Novato’s Mejia-Perez family is about to be deported today.

Following an impassioned protest at Feinstein’s San Francisco office Oct. 29, Salvador and Elida Mejia-Perez, who came to the United States in the early 1990s to escape a civil war in Guatemala, have given up hope the senator would sponsor a private bill allowing them to stay in their Novato home of 17 years.

“We’re very unhappy, but that’s the final word,” said attorney for the family Marc Van Der Hout, who has been working on the case pro bono.

Van Der Hout said the family has changed its plans to take 13-year-old daughter Helen, a United States citizen, back to Guatemala with them. She will stay with the family’s uncle, a legal resident, as will their son Gilbert, 18. Dulce, the family’s 4-year-old daughter, will return with her parents.

Gilbert is not a legal resident and is going through a separate legal process; his next hearing is scheduled for July of 2010.

At an Oct. 29 protest, supporters of the family held signs asking people to call Feinstein’s office and sang “We Shall Overcome.”

" they broke the law, why do you suppor those people. they had plenty of time to do it correctly but ignored it.

The 13 and 4 year old are US citizen they can stay but the others must go. "

" "those people" = illegals
They broke the law and not just one. most likely 2 or more dozen laws they broke.

Everyone that hired and helped them also broke the law. They should be punished too!

Feinstien was right not to get involved in this. Although I do not like her politically for some of the bills she has sponsored and helped pass. Kudos for Feinstien on this one.

If I run a stop at a stop sign, should Feinstien get involved to get me out of trouble with traffic court.

They mortgage broker, the lender the real estate agent all broke the law also by selling them that house. They obtained the house under false pretense, the bank the holds the note should call the note in.

This is the problem with this open door policy that the bleeding hearts what to give them. These illegals like the millions of others have no respect for authority or rules that govern the way the we live by. What go is having a immigration policy that is ignored thousands upon thousands times each and every day?

They are from Guatemala, so they not only broke US immigration policy but Mexicos. How many laws did they break in Mexico? "

City officials will weigh planning options for North Redwood Blvd.at a Feb. 10 meeting, what do you think?
Zone it for sales-tax generating retail, such as a mall, and forget the housing. The city needs to maximize its income from that area.
Require affordable housing to be part of the retail that gets built there.
Leave it alone. It's fine as it is.
