Holiday halo returns to Angel Island

A solar-powered installation of holiday lights will illuminate the top of Angel Island starting Dec. 3. Fire destroyed the previous light installation last year.

Rising from the ashes phoenix-like after the massive wildfire of October ’08, lights will once again shine forth from the top of Angel Island this holiday season.

An annual tradition for decades, the ceremonial lighting of Angel Island will take place this year on Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., in coordination with the Angel Island Association’s (AIA) fourth annual “Angel Lights” benefit, a fundraiser for the nonprofit.

This year’s light array will consist of a sizable pole topped with LED lights powered by solar panels. The solar-powered lighting, funded with help from PG&E, replaces the conventional lighting destroyed by last year’s flames.

“We are especially excited that this year’s AIA benefit will highlight one of the park’s highest priorities — the ‘greening’ and sustainability of the park through the use of solar energy to support the island’s electricity needs,” said Danita Rodriguez, State Parks Marin District superintendent, in a statement.

This year’s Angel Lights benefit, which will take place at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, will once again feature local TV celebrity hosts Doug McConnell and Jan Yanehiro.

With the benefit providing a sizable portion of the nonprofit’s annual budget, AIA board member Christine Brown said the organization is hoping for a strong turnout. Last year, about 125 people attended the event, during which the light atop the island is ceremonially illuminated.

The Angel Island Association works with Angel Island State Park to preserve and restore the island. The association runs a gift shop on the island and presents interpretive and educational programs — currently, the association is producing a short video detailing the history of the island.
