While some digested, others ran Quad Dipsea
By Herald staff
While some Mill Valley residents were presumably nursing turkey hangovers and visiting with family, a hardcore group of 265 runners spent the Saturday after Thanksgiving running the Dipsea trail from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach.
The race starts in Mill Valley’s Old Mill Park, goes to Stinson, back to the park, back to Stinson, and finishes in Old Mill Park, 28.4 miles later.
The 29th annual Quad Dipsea entails 28 grueling miles of mountain running that includes more than 9,000 cumulative feet of ascent, and of course another 9,000-plus feet on the down side.
Out of 265 participants (10 from Mill Valley) who started up the mountain at 8 a.m., an astonishing 233 finished the race by the 4:30 p.m. cutoff time.
Leor Pantilat, 27, of San Carlos, not only won the race but set a mind-boggling course record of 3:48:58. It was his third time running the Quad Dipsea.
The next-fastest was Gary Gellin, 43, of Menlo Park, who clocked in at 4:10:05. Another 16 runners finished the course in under five hours.
The participants celebrated their collective achievement and restored depleted calories with a post-race barbecue.
