Lyn Fox is the latest incarnation of Harry Anslinger who scared ignorant Americans into criminalizing cannabis after alcohol prohibition was repealed.

After shocking public events such as this week’s election result, parents can feel at a loss about how to present information to their children — and there are many opinions to be found. On a number of occasions, I have encountered well-meaning advice cautioning parents to avoid betraying uncertainty and vulnerability, and instead to assure children that grownups have it all figured out.

To my Mill Valley friends, I grew up in Muir Beach and attended Mill Valley public schools my entire life. I’m a writer now and live in Brooklyn. I’m writing to share some perspectives on this election outcome.

(Editor’s note: This is an open letter from an 11th-grade student at Redwood High School in Larkspur to Robert K. Goldman, the President of the Marin County Board of Education. It was part of an AP Language and Composition assignment. It has been edited for length.)

Last week a friend and I went on a hike from the base of the Dipsea Steps to the Cypress Trail and then on to the Tenderfoot Trail on Mount Tam, in Mill Valley.

We should enact an ordinance like San Francisco currently has regarding panhandling. It seems that San Francisco posts signs on Van Ness Avenue at each corner prohibiting begging. Basically, it’s no begging within 20 feet of the corner.

As the spokesperson for the 200,000-plus member American Motorcyclist Association, I must respectfully but strenuously disagree (with your op-ed last week on “lane-splitting.”) Let’s keep the discussion focused on facts and not based on the emotional argument that lane-splitting is “crummy rush-hour etiquette.”

It was announced that Marin County is the healthiest county in the United States. This study was based on outdoor places to hike and recreate as well as access to health care and quality food. It was noted that being one of the most affluent counties in the nation definitely contributed to the healthy lifestyle.

For over 1,400 years, war and terror have been waged within and beyond the Middle East in varying degrees to impose sometimes extreme interpretations of Islam on corresponding unbelievers, in some cases under the threat of death. That ancient war and terror have reached our country during recent decades in the form of mass shootings, fatal bombings, and airliners flown from our airports into major city buildings.

It bothers me when I see the American flag at half-staff with the state flag underneath. It is my understanding that proper flag etiquette is for the state flag to be removed or flown on another pole.

The closing of Sausalito’s 60-year-old movie theatre is going to be a tremendous loss for the community and for its loyal resident moviegoers. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild since 1998 and aware of the importance of cinema for all ages (and with an occasional opera to boot) the cultu…

I stumbled upon Al Coddington’s “The Business of Business” column about lifejacket safety (published Nov. 5, 2014) and really enjoyed the advice he had for the woman wanting her husband to wear a lifejacket while fishing. The gift of a lifejacket could be the gift of life.
