Novato artist and curator Peter Keresztury yearned for a progressive venue for local work, prompting the second annual San Francisco Erotic Art Exhibition, which will be held Sept. 21-23.
After living in Marin County for 40 years and Novato for the past four years, Keresztury felt the scrutiny of censorship in the local art scene. Keresztury, an erotic photographer and sculptor, decided to produce an exhibit without boundaries – one that will showcase 25 artists this weekend at Gallery 4N5 in San Francisco.
“There are many artists who work in the erotic theme, but they have been shunned by mainstream galleries and shows, due to the nature of their work,” Keresztury said. “So I decided to produce erotic art exhibitions.”
Keresztury’s first production was “On the Edge,” an erotic photography exhibition in February 2011, followed by the first San Francisco Erotic Art Exhibition in September 2011.
More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the three-day event, which will feature more than 400 erotic works of art, from the fine art nude to the extreme erotica.
“Some of the art is very risqué and explicit,” Keresztury said. “Our exhibitions give an opportunity to artists to exhibit their work.”
Sausalito painter Nancy Peach and Bolinas photographer Peter C. Turner will also showcase their work. Keresztury will be showing off his photographs and sculptures as well.
“Beautiful faces, shapes and forms of the female body are my inspirations,” Keresztury said. “My sculptures are made of resin fiberglass and some of them are fantasy pieces.
“It is also a great place for attendees to buy erotic art that is unavailable at most art shows, department stores or festivals,” Keresztury said.
Artists are selected after submitting their work to Keresztury and his wife Deborah, who is co-producer and publicist for the annual event.
“We have a committee that decides who will participate in the exhibition,” Keresztury said.
Artists will also mingle with art lovers during the event.
“This makes our exhibition unique, since you get a chance to meet the artist,” Keresztury said. “The show will also feature an erotic fashion show and live performance art.”
The San Francisco Erotic Art Exhibition will be held at Gallery 4N5 on Mission Street, between Fourth and Fifth streets, on Friday, Sept. 21, from 4-10 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1-10 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 23, from noon-5 p.m. Admission is $5 Sept. 21-22, and free on Sept. 23. Attendees must be 21 years old.
