An inmate who was found unresponsive in his Marin County jail cell on Saturday has been identified by the Sonoma County coroner’s office as 27-year-old Anthony Carmignani, of Alameda.

Carmignani was found unconscious in his cell at 12:02 p.m. Saturday, Marin County sheriff’s Lt. Barry Heying said.

He was taken to Kaiser Terra Linda Hospital in San Rafael where he was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m., Heying said.

Carmignani had been arrested by Novato police and booked into the jail Friday on suspicion of vandalism, resisting arrest and a parole violation, San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

Toxicology tests and further investigation will determine his cause of death, a coroner’s office spokeswoman said.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and San Rafael police are investigating the death.
